2026 Speech Competition Judges and Students
On Tuesday 18 August, Year 12 and 13 students from three Southland secondary schools brought the Rotary Four‑Way Test to life through powerful, thoughtful speeches at the Southland Regional Final, held on Level 6 of the Kelvin Hotel.
Students from St Peter’s College, Verdon College, and Southland Girls’ High School presented five‑to‑six‑minute speeches on topics of their choice, weaving the principles of the Four‑Way Test throughout their messages. The event offered a valuable platform for young people to share their ideas, strengthen their communication skills, and grow their confidence as emerging leaders in our community.
The speeches were assessed by a judging panel comprising Lynne Guy from the Dunedin Rotary Club and District Rotary Speech Co‑ordinator, Margaret Whittington from the Five‑Thirty Forum Toastmasters Club, and Michael Gilbert, YMCA Youth Development Coordinator.
Pam Welsh undertook the official timekeeping for the speeches.
After careful consideration, the judges selected Eli Puna (St Peter’s College, Year 12) as the winner of the Southland Regional Final, with Jasmine Rivera (Verdon College, Year 13) awarded runner‑up. Zara Bell (St Peter’s College, Year 12) and Bella Cathcart (Southland Girls’ High School, Year 13) were also commended for delivering excellent speeches and contributing to a high‑quality evening of youth leadership.
All students received a special medallion engraved with the Rotary Four‑Way Test, recognising their effort and preparation.
Eli will head to the Grand Final in Dunedin on 15 September, with travel costs supported by the District, to compete against the Otago and Central Otago regional winners. The Rotary Club of Invercargill proudly supported the hosting of the regional final and provided cash prizes of $125 for the winner and $70 for runner‑up.
