John Kirwan was a special guest speaker at our July 5 meeting.

The plan came together and Sir John Kirwan and the Mitey team made the "lunch" stop at our club meeting on July 12.

The 64 series Land Rover "Mavis" made it to Tuesday’s meeting early and was noticed by the guest speakers as they pulled up in the new shiny defender for lunch.

Mental health advocate Sir John Kirwan stopped in for lunch on a landmark drive across the country to change the course of mental health in Aotearoa, to raise awareness for mental health, and raise funds for the Mitey programme to be delivered in schools.

The drive is in response to new data that highlights three-quarters of New Zealanders believe this generation of children are at greater risk of mental health issues than the generations that preceded them.

Mitey is a fresh approach to teaching mental health as part of the New Zealand curriculum, enabling children to learn about it at school, every day, just like literacy and maths.

Sir John Kirwan spoke on his lived experience with mental health, and his "why" on the developing of the Mitey programme.

Mitey ceo Tim Corbett also spoke about how the programme had been developed during the past two years with input from highly experienced specialists from the University of Auckland as well as New Zealand educators, teachers, and clinicians.

The intent is that Mitey will help address the rising rates of depression and anxiety in our children and ultimately turn our mental health and suicide statistics around.

Thanks to the partnership with Land Rover, there was a Land Rover Defender 90 up for grabs to raise funds to roll out this charitable initiative to more schools, and Jaguar Land Rover CEO, Steve Kenchington joined the meeting and shared his personal connection and why LandRover supported the programme.

Fingers crossed for all those who purchased a Land Rover lottery ticket on the day.
