Following on from the success of last years event, 31st August is the date for our 2022 Sri Lankan Dinner Fundraiser for “Give Every Child A Future (GECAF)”. President Elect Chami is coordinating the evening, in conjunction with Southern Institute of Technology's Training Restaurant, The Bungalow Restaurant. Chami is inviting everyone to come along and experience a little bit of Sri Lanka at this ‘fun-raiser’, with just a little bit of spice that will leave you wanting more. Dr Carr has extensive experience in both public and private governance and leadership. He served as Chair and non-executive director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and served as Deputy Governor and for a time Acting Governor of the Bank. Dr Carr was the founding Chair of the National Infrastructure Advisory Board and for over a decade was a non-executive director of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce. He led the University of Canterbury as Vice Chancellor for ten years, and holds a PhD in Insurance and Risk Management, an MA in Applied Economics and Managerial Science, an MBA in Money and Finance and honours degrees in Law and Economics. |

Eight Rotary Clubs in Southland are coming together as People of Action on 24th September, inviting the wider community to join in on this project with an environmental focus. Picking up rubbish is one way to reduce pollution on the beach. Rubbish pollution on the coastline can enter the ocean affecting the marine ecosystem. Everyone is welcome to join in on this project to support our environment, one of the 7 areas of focus for Rotary on the Rotary Day of Action. Andy Borland is the executive director of Scales Corporation, a NZ diversified Agribusiness Scales Group. A Southlander, he started as a merchandise clerk at J E Watson & Co. He has an enormous wealth of knowledge and experience in New Zealand’s agribusiness sector and equally in banking and finance. He was recently appointed chairman of the Rabobank Board after being a director since 2016.

Eric brings extensive political experience and networks along with farming expertise to the role of Chairman. Eric served as National Party MP between 1993 and 2014 as well as serving as Assistant Speaker of the House from 1998 to 2002 and Deputy Speaker of the House in 2011. After retiring from politics at the 2014 election, Eric was appointed a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order, for services as a Member of Parliament, in the 2015 New Year Honours. Eric is also a Justice of the Peace. He owns and manages Glenore Farms, a Southland-based farm business providing dairy support, running beef, deer along with a sheep operation selling sire rams. Eric was the top polling regional councillor in the recent Environment Southland elections where he will be serving a third term. |

Andrea Vance is a senior journalist at Stuff, with more than 20 years’ experience in reporting. Born in Northern Ireland, she was an investigative reporter for the News of the World, was night news editor for The Scotsman, and worked in New Zealand’s parliamentary Press Gallery for nearly a decade. She was a Jefferson Fellow at the East West Center in Hawaii, and has been recognised with major accolades at the annual media awards. She has reported from Europe, Myanmar, China, Japan, Fiji, South Africa, South Sudan and sub-Antarctica. Andrea was the only Stuff journalist to be selected to travel to the UK to cover Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral service in September and is launching a new book: "Blue Blood" - The inside story of the National Party in crisis. Join us for our 4th week social meeting with a service aspect in the form of some hands-on service, supporting our involvement with the Santa Parade. Each year the Santa Parade floats are given a final check over & clean to ensure they are looking their best for parade day, (Parade Day is 26 November). Tasks may include cleaning, painting or other general parade prep so please dress accordingly. District Governor (DG) Jan Boustead is looking to join us at our Santa Parade Float maintenance working bee on 22 November from 5.30pm. The float workshop is at CP Wool Store, 815 North Rd. There is an informal fish and chip tea following the working bee and DG Jan will give us an update on happenings in the District. RSVPs are required to assist with catering. $10pp to cover fish & chips and a cold beverage. If you have members unable to join in the working bee aspect but keen to come and meet DG Jan - we can make this work too.

The first "service above self" community project for 2023 will the Deep Cove Working bee (January 21 and 22, 2023). A group is required to assist the Deep Cove Outdoor Education Trust with tasks to tidy up before the schools start visiting. Mervyn English has held senior roles in both the public and private sectors via roles such as leading the NZ Treasury SOE (State Owned Enterprises) team, and being in the senior executive teams for the Natural Gas Corporation and Transalta. His governance experience is broad, apart from the SOE leadership role where he was responsible for overseeing the Governments portfolio of commercial entities and setting up several new SOEs, he has been the Director of Governance in the Ministry of Health responsible for DHB Boards and other entities. Along with this he has been a director for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority and the Hillary Outdoors Trust. He was recruited to establish NZ’s first Electricity Market Regulator. In this role he oversaw substantial new investment in the national transmission grid and the resolution of a number of important market function issues. Mervyn was also an Assistant Commissioner at the NZ State Services Commission responsible for the natural resources sector, was an executive in a Wrightson subsidiary, and Deputy Director General for Strategy and People at the Department of Conservation. Currently he lives in Southland and works part time for the Department of Conservation leading Treaty of Waitangi Settlement implementation work. Mervyn holds an MBA – Master of Business Administration (with Distinction), has attended executive education programmes at Harvard and the London School of Economics, and is a member of the Institute of Directors. |

The all new Rotary Ride raising funds for Hospice is on Saturday 25th February, 2023
Riders are invited to meet for a 9am departure from Stead Street Wharf to ride the Invercargill Bluff Trail.
The 25km ride is the southern most part of the 3000km Te Araroa Trail [https://www.es.govt.nz/about-us/invercargill-bluff-trail]
Choose to ride one way or do a return trip - own transport from Bluff is required to be arranged by riders.
Open to all riders of all abilities.
Electric bikes welcomed.
